A kinetic installation for the new UN Visitors’ Centre in Geneva, where three moving clock hands reveal the inner workings of multilateralism and the concrete actions of UN organisations and their partners.
Geneva Working for the World is an installation that pays tribute to the United Nations family in Geneva, a true living ecosystem of global cooperation. It brings together the main United Nations entities and their local and international partners within seven interconnected areas of expertise that embody the shared values and collective mission of UN Geneva as a whole.
This collaborative ecosystem is represented in the form of a watch mechanism—another symbol of Geneva and Switzerland excellence and precision—where the seven fields of expertise become interlocked gears, set in motion under the impulsion of the Palais des Nations and the spirit of Geneva, symbolized by a pendulum and a spring.
At the heart of this mechanism, the kinetic clockhands are complemented by circular screens. Reminiscent of the shape of a magnifying glass, they invite the audience to enter the world of the UN Geneva. Through emblematic keywords linked to the seven areas of expertise, they reveal how each action, each initiative, and each partnership contributes to a greater whole: Geneva's joint effort in the service of the world.
This captivating structure is superimposed on a topographical map of the Geneva region, centered on the Palais des Nations, symbolically situating the United Nations ecosystem in its local context.
By offering multiple levels of interpretation, the installation allows the public to discover the collective identity of the United Nations in Geneva as an interconnected force for global progress, rooted in collaboration, precision, and the sustainable spirit of international cooperation.
The installation was developed in collaboration with designer Lison Christe. Metal clockhands were produced in collaboration with Metal Studio. Topographic map was milled by Workshop 4.0.
